Frequent nutrient deficiencies related to gastric bypass surgery.

Here is an overview of nutrients that have proven troublesome for many gastric bypass patients:

Vitamin B12
Greater than 30% of all gastric bypass patients develop a vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 (or cobalamin) is a member of the b-complex vitamins, which play a role in energy metabolism, are essential to red blood cell production, and contribute to the health of the nervous system. Similar to folic acid (another B vitamin), B12 is required for proper DNA & RNA production. A B12 deficiency can facilitate: pernicious anemia, impaired mental function, impaired nerve function, and reduced heart health.

Iron
Between one-third and one-half of all gastric bypass patients develop an iron deficiency, especially menstruating women. Iron is essential to the transport of oxygen throughout the body as is a major component of hemoglobin in red blood cells, the primary carrier molecule for oxygen. Iron deficiency can facilitate anemia, which occurs when the red blood cells cannot carry enough oxygen throughout the body. Iron is also involved with the function of the immune system as well as mood and behavior control.

Folic Acid
Folic acid deficiency is common in the general American adult population and among gastric bypass patients. This vitamin is a member of the b-complex family of vitamins, which primarily assists the body’s energy production. Folic acid plays a fundamental role in red blood cell production and is important in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke and some cancers. Proper folic acid intake is also vital for the prevention of birth defects by assisting in DNA & RNA production.

Calcium
Calcium is typically the most abundant mineral in the human body and is crucial to the health of bones and teeth. Calcium also plays an important role in maintaining blood pressure, muscle contractions and nerve impulses. The most direct effect of a calcium deficiency is osteoporosis, a disease characterized by thin and weak bones. Calcium is dependent on Vitamin D for uptake into the body so supplements should provide both nutrients.

Zinc
Zinc is required by every cell in the human body. While zinc deficiency is not a frequent occurrence, adequate zinc levels are important to immune function, skin health and fertility. Zinc has also been shown to help reduce the duration of colds and also has antioxidant properties helping the body fight the effect of free radicals.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is a carotenoid, which the body uses to maintain eye health by protecting and improving the mechanism that allows the eye to change between day and night vision. Vitamin A also supports healthy bones, skin teeth and the immune system.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D can be naturally acquired from sunshine and foods such as milk. This important vitamin’s primary role in the body is to assist in the proper uptake of calcium during digestion, allowing calcium to incorporate into the bones and connective tissues.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is recognized for its antioxidant properties as it can thwart the effects of free radicals on cells throughout the cell, especially the heart where free radicals play a role in the development of congestive heart failure.

Directions
As a dietary supplement, adults chew one or more wafers with your meals totaling 5 wafers per day. For best results do not take vitamins with coffee or tea.

VistaVitamins contain naturally chelated minerals for superior absorption. To enhance the natural properties of the vitamins and minerals, we suggest you take them with food or water only. Beverages such as coffee or tea that contain tannins may interfere with vitamin and mineral utilization.
